Defective Rental Bike Sends Pilot Flying into a Half-Million Dollar Damage Award

Having great weather most of the year, one of the more popular activities to do in Orange County is ride a bike. Arthur Wallace, a 59 year old airline pilot was on a layover at the Best Western Redondo Beach Inn. Near The Strand in Manhattan Beach, Wallace decided to take advantage of his location and check out a strand-cruiser bicycle from the hotel. This cruiser bicycle was a single speed bike equipped with a rear-coaster brake. In most situations, the rear-coaster brake is activated by applying pressure in a rearward direction on the pedals. This incident, however, is an exception to that common rule.

As Wallace was riding down a hill, the brake suddenly locked up. The instantaneous braking caused the bike to come to an abrupt stop and caused Wallace to fly forward and over the handlebars. Even though the bicycle maintenance employee had not taken the time to inspect the bike, Wallace conducted his own inspection. Wallace noticed that the brake arm of the coaster bike was not attached to the frame of the bike as it should have been.

Wallace suffered injuries that are commonly dealt with by the bicycle accident lawyers at The Roberts Law Firm in Orange County. Wallace suffered a fourth degree shoulder separation which required two surgeries. Wallace also suffered a right inguinal hernia which required surgery to repair with a mesh covering.

As a result of his injuries, Wallace was unable to do perform his job as flying captain on the 747-400 for nine and a half months. The first and only settlement offer made by the defendant hotel was $15,000.

Orange County personal injury attorney Jeff Roberts was able to represent Wallace and ensure that he received fair compensation for his injuries. A $15,000 offer was inadequate to satisfy the damages sustained by Wallace. With his experience as a successful personal injury attorney, Jeff Roberts turned ‘pocket change’ into $550,000.

The bicycle accident lawyers at The Roberts Law Firm are dedicated to helping victims recover adequate compensation. By helping his client recover more than half a million dollars in damages, Jeff Roberts ensured that Wallace received fair compensation for his injuries and his inability to do his job as flying captain for almost a year.
