Pedestrians Take a Big Risk by Crossing Streets in Southern California
In a recent report issued from Transportation from America, the southern California metro area is the most dangerous area for pedestrians. Even though many pedestrian accidents are caused by motorists, pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings in order to prevent the death or serious bodily injury.
On August 12, 2010, the Los Angeles Police Department conducted a crosswalk safety enforcement operation. During this operation, motorists were cited for failing to yield to undercover officers who were crossing an unmarked crosswalk on Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood. In response to recent incidents resulting in death or severe injury to pedestrians, the purpose of these operations is to enforce crosswalk safety.
One of the main causes of pedestrian accidents is poorly designed sidewalks and crossing areas. The failure to provide proper lighting, safety features and signs at an intersection contributed to a traumatic accident that occurred in Orange County last year. A child, crossing the street in a school area, was hit by a car. One year after this accident, the child is left with severe brain injuries and is in a coma.
Another recent incident that occurred in Los Angels was the wrongful death of a 63 year old woman. The woman was in a crosswalk when she was hit by Xerox truck whose driver was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. This is a case currently being handled by The Roberts Law Firm, Orange County personal injury attorneys.
Last year, there were 491 pedestrian deaths in California. These deaths can be prevented by increasing effort and focus upon pedestrian safety. The LAPD seems to have the right idea by enforcing the law and punishing drivers for failing to yield to pedestrians.
