MR. JEFFREY T. ROBERTS: Most civil cases never see the inside of a courtroom, but occasionally a case does go to trial and it's important that you have a lawyer on your side who has been a trial attorney. Myself, I am a trial attorney and this is where I work when I'm in trial. Here is the jury box. This is where 12 people sit and they decide the case. They listen to the facts. They listen to you talk and tell them your story, tell them about your injuries. And then later they'll go into the jury room and they'll decide your case.
This area up here is called the bench. This is where the judge sits during the trial. During the course of the trial the judge will rule on the attorney's objections, also at the end of the case the judge will instruct the jury as to the law. This area here to the left of the judge is called the witness box. This is where the witness sits and gives testimony during the case. The jury, which sits over to the witnesses left is looking at the witness, trying to assess their credibility and determine if what they're telling is the truth.
During most of a trial, myself and my client are sitting at the counsel table. But during the case I'll stand up to talk to the witnesses or if I'm giving opening or closing statements I will use the podium.
