Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Do you suffer from chronic, severe pain?

Millions of men and women in the United States suffer from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD). Although most people diagnosed with RSD are between the ages of 40 and 60, RSD can occur at any age. RSD affects both men and women; however, like most chronic pain conditions, it is more commonly diagnosed in women. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, you should speak to an attorney about your rights. The attorneys of The Roberts | Jeandron Law Firm, serving Orange County and all other Southern California communities, have answered some of the most commonly asked questions about RSD below. Please read through them, and contact our practice to schedule a consultation.

What is RSD?

RSD is a disorder of the sympathetic nervous system that is characterized by chronic, severe pain. Although RSD is still not fully understood, the chronic pain associated with the disorder is caused by abnormal responses from the sympathetic nervous system. RSD is also commonly referred to as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). There are two types of CRPS: RSD and Causalgia. RSD is distinguishable from Causalgia because of its subtle nerve damage, often the result of an accident or physical injury.

What are RSD symptoms?

The most prevalent symptom of RSD is a continuous, intense pain that increases over time. The pain is generally disproportionate to the type of injury and may become evident days or even months after the occurrence of the injury. Additional symptoms of RSD include burning pain, swelling of skin, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, and perspiration. These symptoms usually appear near the site of an injury and are common in the arms, fingers, hands, shoulders, legs, knees, or hip.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, it’s best to contact attorneys in your area to discuss your rights. Orange County personal injury lawyer Jeff Roberts can provide valuable legal advice and help you determine if someone else is responsible for your condition.

What causes RSD?

Although the exact cause and development of RSD is poorly understood, two-thirds of RSD cases are related to nerve trauma associated with a physical injury. RSD may develop from simple physical injuries including a cut, bump, or bruise or more serious physical injuries such as paralysis, bone fractures, surgery, or heart disease.

Pathways to Recovery

As RSD has become better understood and accepted, those who suffer from the disorder have been able to obtain proper relief. Most RSD cases require the expertise of neurologists to help determine the nature of the pain. A critical factor in determining whether one has an RSD claim is whether the injury from which the RSD stems was caused by the wrongful or negligent act of another party or by a defective product.
